Snakes

Snakes

Snakes also find their way in our homes and just like lizards they’re a large number to choose from. Snakes can also be classified in various families and species and therefore it’s vital to get well informed before you obtain one, because some get quite big and need lots of space.

The bigger constrictors and venomous species aren’t for the beginner and should be avoided, but beside these species there’s plenty to choose from.

Snakes differ from lizards in their lack of legs (although there are various legless lizards, the split tongue lets you know, you’re dealing with a snake). The body, like that of most reptiles is covered in scales which they shed during periods of growth.

Turtles

Turtles

Turtles and tortoises are a remarkable group of animals for various reasons, unfortunately it’s the most endangered group of vertebrate animals and many species face extinction. Due to this fact is always ways to carefully consider which species you want to own and if so that they’re bought through reliable channels.

These animals are also anatomically very unique, they all have a specialized ribcage that has grown inside out to form its back shield, called the carapax. On the underside they also have a protective bony plate called the plastron. The carapax holds all the organs in place and gives the animal protection.

River turtles are mostly kept in captivity, but different types of tortoises are available. Most river turtles need a lot of space and are mostly predators, which make them harder to care for, than most tortoise species. The tortoise group are mainly herbivores.

Crocodilians

Crocodilians

Crocodilians are less frequent in the hobby due to their large size and or often too dangerous to keep in captivity. Therefore, the numbers are limited but this is also because many species are endangered and can’t be sold and kept as pets.

Some species do find their way in private collections and they’re the smaller types like the pygmy crocodile, and Cuvier’s caiman, sometimes we also find the spectacled caiman, but they tend to grow to quite a big size.

Due to this fact, we won’t go into further detail on the site, but for additional information we’re always available.
